Faking Face Recognition
This week CNET news reported on some interesting, new ways of bypassing facial recognition technology built into newer laptops. The reporter (Dong Ngo) published an interesting article which shows an easy way of bypassing the software from companies such as Lenovo, Toshiba and Asus that are shipped on popular laptops. By using a slightly modified picture of the correct recipient, one can easily fool the software. Read more…
Focus-ing on Data Protection
Last week, as many of you may know, was the inaugural McAfee user conference, snappily titled “Focus 2008.” At Focus, I had the honor of participating on one of the panels alongside some of our valued customers.
The subject of the panel was “Is it possible to get ROI on data protection projects?” I’ll cut to the chase and let you know that the answer we and the audience arrived at was no, it’s not possible to predict or demonstrate ROI in advance of the project. BUT, it’s possible to give some indications of value, and certainly it’s possible to make some ROI estimations during and after implementation. Read more…
Bitmap Discovery Exploits
It was announced back in October 2008 that Bernd Roellgen of PMC Ciphers has “discovered” a possible exploit which can be used to reveal details of the encryption key used to protect hard disk image backups. PMC used this information to promote the release of a new version of their software which is immune.

How to Spend Your Data Protection Dollars
I was speaking last week at a panel of CISO’s when someone asked me the very reasonable question “What’s the most important thing we should do to protect our data?” – What the audience member wanted to know really was, given that he had no budget, and a state mandate impressing on him the need to protect PII (personally identifiable information), what’s the minimum he could do to comply with the regulations? McAfee Acquires SafeBoot
SafeBoot Logo
McAfee Logo
Yes it’s true – McAfee and SafeBoot have entered into an acquisition agreement.
I know for some of you this may come as a shock, especially those involved in our IPO track, but I, Gerhard, and the rest of the board truly believe this is in the best long term interests of all of us, shareholders and employees alike.
There were many reasons for aligning ourselves with McAfee, we share the same product vision, the same understanding of the value of niche players, and of course, if you take the blunt view, do you want to compete against them?
In all seriousness this has the potential to be a very happy marrige for customers and us alike, and I hope you all will celebrate this union.
In anticipation of great things to come!
